Chess Coaches in Sweden

Sweden is known for a deep, well-organized club and league system rather than one dominant city, and for producing a run of world-class grandmasters, from Ulf Andersson's endgame mastery to Nils Grandelius and Pia Cramling today.

The national scene

Chess in Sweden is governed by the Swedish Chess Federation (Sveriges Schackförbund, SSF), founded in 1917 and a full FIDE member representing the country at the Olympiad, European Team Championship, and Nordic championships. SSF counts roughly 40,000 members across some 1,000 clubs organized into 24 districts. Club play runs through the Allsvenskan system, topped by the ten-team Elitserien, then Superettan and Divisions I-III, with about 175 teams competing nationwide; SK Rockaden of Stockholm, founded in 1921, is the largest club and has played in Elitserien since 1972/73. Stockholm hosted the 7th Chess Olympiad in 1937, and the Swedish Chess Championship has been contested almost continuously since that same founding year.

  • The Elitserien (10-team round robin) tops a full national pyramid down through Superettan and Divisions I-III, with roughly 175 teams playing under the Allsvenskan system
  • Stockholm's SK Rockaden, founded in 1921, is the country's largest club and a fixture in Elitserien since the early 1970s
  • Sweden hosted the 7th Chess Olympiad in Stockholm in 1937, and the Swedish Chess Championship has run almost every year since 1917
