Chess Coaches in Switzerland

Switzerland's chess identity rests on two things: it's where the Swiss system of tournament pairing was invented, and it hosts one of Europe's longest-running international chess festivals, in Biel.

The national scene

Organized Swiss chess runs through the Schweizerischer Schachbund (SSB), formed in 1995 from the merger of the older Swiss Chess Federation (founded 1889) and the Swiss Workers' Chess Federation (founded 1923); Switzerland was a founding member of FIDE in 1924, and the SSB belongs to the European Chess Union. Club and team competition is organized nationally through the Nationalliga system, with clubs such as Schachgesellschaft Zürich among the country's stronger teams, alongside the Biel clubs and clubs in Bern and Geneva. Biel/Bienne is the country's clearest international showcase, hosting the annual Biel International Chess Festival since 1968 and three FIDE Interzonal tournaments (1976, 1985, and 1993). Zurich carries its own historical weight: the Swiss system of pairing was first used there in 1895, and the city later hosted the famous Zurich 1934 tournament. Switzerland has also become an institutional home for the game more broadly, since FIDE moved its headquarters to Lausanne in 2018.

Team play centers on the Nationalliga (Swiss Team Championship), with clubs like Schachgesellschaft Zürich, the Biel clubs, and clubs in Bern and Geneva competing across national divisions.
Biel/Bienne hosts the Biel International Chess Festival every summer, an open-and-grandmaster event running continuously since 1968 that has also staged three FIDE Interzonal tournaments (1976, 1985, 1993).
The Swiss system itself began here — first used at a Zurich tournament in 1895 — so the country's tournament culture and its most-exported invention are the same thing.
