Chess history

Chess in the Czech lands is organized by the Šachový svaz České republiky (Czech Chess Federation), a FIDE member federation that runs the national championships and the domestic league system. The top team competition, the Czech Extraliga, is regarded as one of the strongest club leagues in Europe, dominated in recent years by the Nový Bor Chess Club, which has won the title well over a dozen times. Prague is the clear centre of gravity: it hosted the 4th Chess Olympiad in 1931, and since 2019 has run the Prague International Chess Festival, an annual event at the Don Giovanni Hotel that has drawn elite fields, including a young Alireza Firouzja's breakthrough win in 2020. The country's competitive tradition runs back through Czechoslovakia, which won Olympiad gold at the 1924 Paris event and took silver at the 1939 Buenos Aires Olympiad, producing generations of internationally titled players. David Navara has been the country's leading player for two decades, regularly representing the Czech Republic at Olympiad level.

  • The Czech Extraliga is one of Europe's strongest club leagues — a realistic target for ambitious club players, not just an amateur circuit.
  • Prague hosts an annual elite event, the Prague International Chess Festival (Don Giovanni Hotel), alongside deep local club and league play.
  • The federation (chess.cz) is a FIDE member and runs the national championship structure, so results and titles here carry standard FIDE rating weight.
