Organized chess in Guatemala runs through the Federación Nacional de Ajedrez de Guatemala (FENAG), formed on May 2, 1966 out of the earlier Centro Ajedrecista de Guatemala and affiliated with FIDE since that founding. FENAG is based in Guatemala City and oversees federated play and the country's presence in international FIDE events. The Guatemalan Chess Championship is the national scene's centerpiece, with recorded winners dating back to 1923. Guatemala City itself has occasionally punched above its weight on the calendar: a January 2019 open there drew ten grandmasters, with GM Sandro Mareco of Argentina winning on tiebreak, making it the strongest tournament held in Guatemala and Central America to that point. Guatemala has also sent players to the Chess Olympiad, including its team to the 31st Olympiad in Moscow in 1994.
