Chess Tournaments in Azerbaijan

The Azerbaijan Chess Federation (Azərbaycan Şahmat Federasiyası), founded in 1920 and reorganized after independence in 1992, is Azerbaijan's FIDE member federation and is headquartered in Baku alongside the Baku Chess Academy on the Caspian seafront. Baku is overwhelmingly the center of the country's chess life, tracing back to Soviet-era institutions like the Baku Palace of Pioneers chess circle that trained a young Garry Kasparov. That infrastructure still shows in results: Azerbaijan's men's team has taken European Team Chess Championship gold multiple times (2009, 2013, 2017), and in 2016 Baku hosted the 42nd Chess Olympiad at the Baku Crystal Hall, drawing teams from 175 countries. For a country of under ten million people, the concentration of grandmaster-level talent produced through Baku's clubs and schools is unusual by world standards.
