Chess Tournaments in Belgium

Belgium's chess scene is a quieter, club-centered counterpart to its bigger neighbors — a country of steady tradition rather than a modern super-power, built on Brussels-area clubs and a national team league that has run for decades.

The national scene

Chess in Belgium is organized by the Royal Belgian Chess Federation (FRBE-KBSB-KSB), founded in December 1920 by clubs from Brussels, Antwerp, Ghent, and Liège, and today structured around three linked community federations: the Flemish VSF, the French-speaking FEFB, and the German-speaking SVDB. The federation is a FIDE member and runs the Belgian Chess Championship, held annually since 1921, alongside a national ratings list and youth programs. Club competition centers on the National Interclubs, a tiered team league running from a top division down through lower divisions, which lets strong city clubs and small local ones both compete within the same system. Belgium's golden era on the board came through Albéric O'Kelly de Galway, who won 13 national titles and later became world correspondence champion, and George Koltanowski, an interwar champion who went on to global fame for blindfold chess. In the modern era, Luc Winants carried the country's GM title for years, representing Belgium on a record nine Olympiad teams before his death in 2023.
