Chess Tournaments in Bulgaria

Bulgaria has one of the deeper chess traditions in Eastern Europe, having produced a men's World Champion and a Women's World Champion within the same generation and hosted a Chess Olympiad in the Cold War era.

The national scene

Organized chess in Bulgaria traces back to the Bulgarian Chess Union, founded in 1928, and the Bulgarian Chess Championship has run almost every year since 1933. Sofia is the clear center of the scene, home to long-running clubs such as CSKA Sofia and Slavia Sofia, alongside a calendar of open tournaments including the Sofia Spring Chess event. Bulgaria hosted the 15th Chess Olympiad in Varna in 1962, and its women's team took European Team Championship gold as recently as 2023. The federation side has been turbulent over the past decade, with competing organizations vying for FIDE recognition; the Bulgarian Sports Chess Federation was admitted as Bulgaria's FIDE member federation in late 2023. That turbulence hasn't dented the playing pool, which remains one of the more active in the region.
