Chess Tournaments in Norway

Norway's chess reputation rests on one extraordinary fact: it produced Magnus Carlsen, a World Champion from 2013 to 2023 and the highest-rated player in history, and it has built a real tournament culture around that success.

The national scene

Chess in Norway is organized by the Norwegian Chess Federation (Norges Sjakkforbund, NSF), founded in 1914 and a FIDE member, which oversees roughly 170 affiliated clubs nationwide. The Norwegian Chess Championship (NM i sjakk) is held every July at a club-hosted venue chosen by the federation, and the Norwegian Team League gives established clubs such as Oslo Schakselskap a regular competitive season. The country's clearest showcase to outsiders is Norway Chess, an elite closed tournament that ran in Stavanger from 2013 before shifting to Oslo for its 2026 edition, drawing the world's top grandmasters each year. Norway's competitive strength is closely tied to the Norwegian College of Elite Sport (NTG) in Oslo, where coach and GM Simen Agdestein trained a generation of players, most famously Magnus Carlsen and Jon Ludvig Hammer. For a country of just over five million people, that concentration of world-class results is unusual and gives Norwegian chess an outsized international profile.
