Chess Clubs in Armenia
Armenia is one of the world's most chess-dense nations relative to its size, with chess taught as a required subject in its primary schools and a national team that has stood on top of the Chess Olympiad podium three times.
Chess in Armenia is organized nationally by the Chess Federation of Armenia, founded in 1927 and affiliated with FIDE. Yerevan is the clear center of the game, anchored by the Tigran Petrosian Chess House, which hosts the Armenian Chess Championship and Women's Chess Championship as well as memorial and youth events. The country's competitive tradition runs deep: Tigran Petrosian held the World Chess Championship from 1963 to 1969, and Armenia's national men's team won three Chess Olympiads in a row (Turin 2006, Dresden 2008, Istanbul 2012). Since the 2011-12 school year, chess has been a mandatory subject in Armenian primary schools (grades 2 through 4), feeding a strong pipeline of young players into club and federation play.
