Chess Clubs in Poland

Poland has one of Europe's deepest chess histories, from the Olympiad-winning teams of the 1930s to a current world-class grandmaster in Jan-Krzysztof Duda, all organized under one of the oldest national federations in the game.

The national scene

The Polish Chess Federation (Polski Związek Szachowy, PZSzach) was founded in Warsaw in 1926 and joined FIDE in 1927, making it a long-standing member federation. It runs the national championship, first held in Warsaw in 1926. The country's competitive high point came at the 1930 Chess Olympiad in Hamburg, where a Polish team anchored by Akiba Rubinstein and captained by Savielly Tartakower won gold. Today the domestic scene runs on club leagues topped by the Ekstraliga, Poland's top team championship, with matches hosted around the country, and the federation's home base remains Warsaw. Poland's modern strength is carried by Jan-Krzysztof Duda, who won the 2021 FIDE World Cup, and Radosław Wojtaszek, a six-time Polish champion.

The Polish Chess Federation (PZSzach), founded in 1926, joined FIDE in 1927 — one of the earliest national federations to do so.
Club chess is organized through a national league system topped by the Ekstraliga, Poland's top team division.
