About
I’m Carter, the founder of C3 Chess and a chess coach based in San Antonio. I’ve coached more than 100 students through schools, clubs, group classes, and private lessons.
If you or your child has never played chess before, that’s completely fine. Many of my students started without knowing how the pieces move. We’ll start wherever you are, take our time with the basics, and leave plenty of room for questions.
Having a grandmaster as a coach is actually less effective and more expensive if you are in the 0-2000 rating range. Most of my experience is helping players through the beginner and intermediate stages, from their first game up to around 1800 USCF or 2000 on Chess.com.
During lessons, we work through positions, look at your games, and practice making decisions at the board. I want students to understand why a move works and feel comfortable explaining their own ideas. What we work on depends on the student, whether they’re learning the rules, preparing for a tournament, or just enjoying the game and wanting to improve.
How much you get out of coaching depends a lot on the work you put in, both during lessons and especially between them. You don’t have to spend hours studying every day, but regularly practicing what we cover makes a difference.
Every private lesson includes a recap and progress notes so you know what we worked on. If you’d like more help knowing what to practice between lessons, I offer a Training Plan with personalized homework, specific assignments, and a lesson path based on your goals. We adjust it as we see what’s improving and what needs more attention.

Online lessons take place inside dedicated lesson meeting rooms, where we can work through positions, review games, and keep everything organized in one place.
Single lessons are a good fit if you want to try a lesson, work on a specific area, or prefer to book one session at a time. Packages are designed for students who want more continuity and a structured plan for improving between lessons.

1 lesson: $60
5 lessons: $275 total ($55 per lesson)
10 lessons: $500 total ($50 per lesson)
Cancellation & rescheduling
- 24+ hours before the lesson: free cancellation or rescheduling
- Less than 24 hours: the lesson is normally charged or forfeited
- 5-lesson packages include 1 courtesy late-cancellation credit
- 10-lesson packages include 2 courtesy late-cancellation credits
- No-shows without notice are charged and do not qualify for a courtesy credit
- Single lessons do not automatically include a late-cancellation credit

Travel fees
Travel fees are charged per visit:
- 0 to 5 miles: no fee
- More than 5 to 10 miles: +$5
- More than 10 to 15 miles: +$10
- More than 15 to 20 miles: +$15
- More than 20 miles: custom quote, subject to availability
