China has grown into one of the strongest chess nations in the world, holding both the men's and women's World Championship titles at once and backing that up with a well-organized domestic league.

The national scene

The Chinese Chess Association (CCA), founded in 1986 and based in Beijing, governs the game nationally and has been a FIDE member since 1975; former Women's World Champion Xie Jun has served as its president since 2019. The CCA runs the China Chess League (CCL), a professional club competition played April to November with teams representing cities such as Shanghai, Beijing, Tianjin, and Chongqing, each squad fielding Chinese players alongside foreign titled talent. China's national teams have been Olympiad powerhouses, with the women winning gold in 1998, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2016, and 2018, and the men taking gold in 2014 and 2018. In 2023, Ding Liren became the country's first men's World Champion, while Ju Wenjun has held the Women's World Championship title since 2018 - giving China both crowns at once.

China currently holds both the open and women's World Chess Championship titles, a rare double for one federation.
