Chess Coaches in Russia

Russia's chess story is the Soviet chess school made permanent: a training culture that produced more world champions than any other country, still centered on Moscow's clubs and its demanding national championship.

The national scene

Chess in Russia grew out of the Soviet chess school, a state-supported training tradition that produced an unbroken run of world champions from Mikhail Botvinnik through Vasily Smyslov, Tigran Petrosian, Boris Spassky, Anatoly Karpov, Garry Kasparov, and Vladimir Kramnik. Moscow is the clear institutional center, home to the historic Central Chess Club on Gogolevsky Boulevard and to the Russian Chess Championship (often called the Superfinal), the country's top annual round-robin. Russia has twice hosted the Chess Olympiad, in Elista (1998) and Khanty-Mansiysk (2010). The Chess Federation of Russia, founded in 1992 after the USSR Chess Federation dissolved, governs the sport nationally; in June 2026 its FIDE membership was suspended for three years (until it complies with a Court of Arbitration for Sport ruling) over chess events held in occupied Ukrainian regions, though individual Russian players retain the right to compete in FIDE events under the FIDE flag.

  • The competitive bar is exceptionally high: Russia has produced more world champions than any other country, so club and tournament play at every level tends to be rigorous and well-coached.
  • Moscow remains the country's chess center, anchored by the historic Central Chess Club on Gogolevsky Boulevard, alongside the long-running Russian Chess Championship (Superfinal) circuit.
  • As of mid-2026, the Chess Federation of Russia is suspended from FIDE over events held in occupied Ukrainian territory; individual Russian players can still compete internationally, but they play under FIDE's neutral flag rather than Russia's.
