Chess Coaches in Spain

Chess in Spain is organized nationally by the Federación Española de Ajedrez (FEDA), created in 1927 and based in Madrid, with regional federations covering each autonomous community. The top club competition, the División de Honor, is contested each year in Linares — a city whose name is inseparable from chess thanks to the Linares International Tournament, held from 1978 through 2010 and often called "the Wimbledon of chess" for the strength of its fields. Spain has also hosted major FIDE events, including the 1987 World Championship match between Garry Kasparov and Anatoly Karpov in Seville, and the 36th Chess Olympiad in Calvià, Mallorca, in 2004. The national scene has produced strong homegrown grandmasters like Miguel Illescas and Paco Vallejo Pons, and for years was also home to Alexei Shirov, one of the sport's most feared attacking players.
