The national scene

Chess in Panama is organized under the Federación Panameña de Ajedrez (FPA), the country's FIDE-affiliated national body. Its marquee event, the Panamanian Chess Championship, has been contested since 1945, when Rubén Darío Cabrera won the first title. Panama City is where the scene is centered, home to most of the country's organized tournament play. The federation earned its highest-profile hosting moment when Panama City staged the IX Campeonato Iberoamericano Absoluto "Panamá 2023," a nine-round Swiss event that drew players from 23 countries, won by Chilean grandmaster Cristóbal Henríquez Villagra. On the playing side, Jorge Baúles became the country's first International Master in 2008 and has represented Panama across multiple Chess Olympiads. For a smaller federation, Panama's chess culture is notably close-knit and family-driven, best captured by a unique record: it is the only country where a father and daughter have been national champions in the same year, and it happened twice, in 2004 and 2008.
