Colombia is known for a chess scene that punches above its regional weight: a national championship tradition stretching back nearly a century, a FIDE-affiliated federation, and a growing role as host for international youth events. The national scene

The Federación Colombiana de Ajedrez (FECODAZ) governs the sport nationally from Bogotá and is a member of both FIDE and the Confederation of the Americas Chess. The Colombian Chess Championship dates back to 1928 in Cali, with the women's championship following in 1965 in Bogotá. Bogotá remains the administrative center of the game, but Medellín and Cali have their own strong competitive histories, and Medellín made international history by hosting the 6th Women's Chess Olympiad in 1974. More recently, Barranquilla hosted the FIDE World Youth U16 Chess Olympiad in 2025, drawing more than 45 national delegations.
