The national scene

The Federación Venezolana de Ajedrez (FVA) was founded in 1935 and has been affiliated with FIDE since 1939, making it one of the longer-standing federations in Latin America. Caracas is the clear center of gravity, anchored historically by the Universidad Central de Venezuela (UCV) chess club, whose members helped seed chess associations around the country from the late 1960s onward. The Venezuelan Chess Championship traces informally back to an 1891 match and has been organized by the FVA since 1938, with the 2026 national Championship of Experts and Masters, held at the Poliedro de Caracas, seeing its titles go to a player from Caracas and a player from Trujillo — a reminder that competitive strength isn't confined to the capital. Many of Venezuela's strongest players have competed abroad in recent years, but the domestic scene keeps producing new talent through federation-run tournaments and youth events.
