Titled Chess Coaches in Kentucky

Kentucky chess runs through the Kentucky Chess Association, the state's USCF affiliate, which organizes the scholastic calendar and the adult open circuit and lists active clubs statewide. Louisville and Lexington are the two main hubs: Louisville has a long-running club tradition tied to figures like Steve Dillard, a multi-decade KCA and Louisville Chess Club officer, while Lexington benefits from the presence of GM Gregory Kaidanov, who settled there in 1991 after emigrating from the Soviet Union and runs United States Chess School training camps in the city. The state's signature annual event is the Stephen P. Dillard Kentucky Open Championship, named for Dillard's decades of volunteer service to Kentucky chess. Historically, Kentucky's biggest claim to chess fame is Jackson Showalter of Minerva, "the Kentucky Lion," a four-time U.S. Chess Champion around the turn of the 20th century who died in Georgetown, Kentucky.
