Titled Chess Coaches in Maryland

The Maryland Chess Association (MCA), the state's US Chess affiliate, has run the Maryland Open since 1955, and today its slate of major opens also includes the Potomac Open and the Chesapeake Open, plus the annual Maryland State Scholastic Championships for K-12 players. Rockville is a hub of regular club play: the Rockville Chess Club meets every Monday and on the second and fourth Friday of each month at the Rockville Science Center, and the city also hosts the Washington International, a nine-round FIDE-rated summer tournament with norm chances that draws titled players from across the country. Silver Spring is home to the U.S. Chess Center, a nonprofit that grew out of a 1989 Garry Kasparov visit, was established in 1991, and has since taught tens of thousands of Washington-area children the game. And the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) built one of the great collegiate chess programs in the country, winning multiple Pan-American Intercollegiate titles beginning in 1996 and a string of President's Cup ("Final Four of College Chess") championships in the 2000s.
