Titled Chess Coaches in Montana

The Montana Chess Association (MCA), the state's USCF affiliate, ties together clubs in Missoula, Bozeman, Billings, Great Falls, Butte, Bigfork, Lewistown, and the Flathead Valley. Missoula and Bozeman carry much of the year-round activity, the latter anchored by the Montana State University Chess Club, while Billings hosts regular open-to-all club nights. The MCA's championship history goes back to 1935, with State Open results on record from that year. The calendar repeats every year around a handful of fixtures: the Montana Open in Bozeman, the State (Closed) Championship, the Turkey Open in Missoula, the Chinook Open in Great Falls, the Big Sky Open in Kalispell, and Helena's Winter Thaw.

• The Montana Open (Bozeman, spring) and the qualifier-based State Closed Championship are the MCA's two marquee events and draw the state's strongest regulars.
• Missoula's Turkey Open (November) and the Winter Thaw (January, usually in Helena) are reliable, welcoming entry points for rated and unrated players alike.
• Weekly club nights are casual and free, including the Billings Chess Club's Thursday meetups and the University-Community Chess Club at the University of Montana in Missoula.
