Chess Clubs in Latvia
Latvia is chess shorthand for Riga — the birthplace of eighth World Champion Mikhail Tal and a city whose attacking style of play, the "Latvian school," still defines how the country's players are known abroad.
Latvian chess is centered on Riga, where the Riga Chess Association was founded in 1890, decades before the Latvian Chess Federation itself was established in 1924. The federation still runs the Latvian Chess Championship every year and represents the country at FIDE, of which it is a full member. Riga's clubs and coaches are largely responsible for what's often called the "Latvian school" — an attacking, tactically sharp style of play that produced eighth World Champion Mikhail Tal and, a generation later, Alexei Shirov, one of the game's most feared attacking players, who returned to play for Latvia after some years representing Spain. On the women's side, Dana Reizniece-Ozola built her chess career through the same system before going on to serve as FIDE's managing director. For a country of under two million people, that concentration of world-class talent out of one city is unusual and still shapes how Latvia is coached and organized today.
