The Netherlands is best known for producing a World Champion in Max Euwe and for hosting the Tata Steel Chess Tournament in Wijk aan Zee, one of the strongest and longest-running annual events on the calendar.
Dutch chess runs through the Koninklijke Nederlandse Schaakbond (KNSB), founded in 1873 and a FIDE member since 1924, which organizes the national KNSB-competitie league alongside youth and school programs. Amsterdam and Rotterdam anchor the club scene, but competitive chess is spread across many regional clubs rather than concentrated in one city. The country's biggest annual draw is the Tata Steel Chess Tournament, which began in 1938 as the Hoogovens tournament in Beverwijk and moved to nearby Wijk aan Zee in 1968; held every January, it regularly brings in the world's top grandmasters. The Netherlands also hosted the Chess Olympiad in Amsterdam in 1954. That tradition of strong, well-organized competitive chess carried from Max Euwe's 1935 World Championship win through Jan Timman's run as one of the top players of the 1980s to Anish Giri's current standing near the world top ten.

Dutch grandmaster and the country's number one, a five-time national champion and a fixture near the world top ten who has represented the Netherlands at seven Chess Olympiads.
