The national scene

The Federación Paraguaya de Ajedrez (FEPARAJ), founded in Asunción in 1952 and FIDE-affiliated since 1984, governs the sport and coordinates over two dozen affiliated clubs, mostly concentrated in and around the capital. The Paraguayan Chess Championship itself predates the federation, having been launched in 1938 by the Círculo Paraguayo de Ajedrez, the country's first dedicated chess club, and it has run for most years since. FEPARAJ today organizes national amateur, youth, and university championships along with a club-based Grand Prix circuit, and Paraguay has fielded teams at the Chess Olympiad at irregular intervals going back to Buenos Aires 1939. Asunción has also hosted regional youth events in recent years, including the Pan-American School Chess Championship in 2024 and the Pan-American Juniors Championship in 2025, giving local juniors a home continental stage. The competitive pipeline is small relative to South American neighbors like Argentina or Brazil, but it produced Paraguay's first grandmaster in 1990 and a second less than two decades later.
