Chess Clubs in Ireland

Chess in Ireland is organized under the Irish Chess Union (ICU), founded in 1912 and a FIDE member federation since 1933. The ICU runs the Irish Chess Championship and selects the national team, while day-to-day club chess is organized through four provincial bodies — the Leinster, Ulster, Munster, and Connacht chess unions. Dublin is the clear center of gravity, home to the ICU and a dense cluster of clubs, but the provincial league structure means serious competition exists well beyond the capital. Dublin's Armstrong Cup, the top division of the Leinster league, has run every year since 1888, making it one of the longest continuously-played team chess competitions in the world. Ireland's most accomplished current player is grandmaster Alexander Baburin, based in Dublin, while John O'Hanlon — nine-time Irish champion in the early twentieth century — remains the sport's best-known historical figure.
