Unrated players may play in the open section or the U1500 section, but will only be eligible for the open section place prizes unless the tournament directors have been able to assign a rating. For unrated USCF players with established foreign ratings, the most current USCF conversion will be used (with preference toward their FIDE rating, if available). Games including FIDE rated players 2400 or above are not FIDE rated due to time control and format.
**Byes: **Two half point byes are available upon request. No bye requests shall be made after round three other than for emergency situations.
Parking: Parking permits are not required in most parking zones on Tulane University campus during the weekend. For ease, we recommend using the Diboll Garage. Diboll Garage is a short walk from the Lavin-Bernick Center and has plenty of space available for our attendees. Consult the annotated parking map here.
Hotel info: We recommend the St Charles Inn - Superior Hotel. We do not have a group rate, however.
**Late players: **Any player arriving at the chessboard more than 30 minutes late from the actual starting time of the round will lose their game (xref USCF 13D and FIDE 6.7.1). If both players arrive late elapsed time will be split between the players (xref USCF 16K and FIDE 6.7.2).
Conduct: Any player who does not shake hands with the opponent (or greets the opponent in a normal social manner in accordance with the conventional rules of their society) before the game starts or during a match (and does not do it after being asked to do so by the arbiter) or deliberately insults his/her opponent or the officials of the event, may be penalized according to FIDE law 12.9 and/or US Chess rule 13I.
Prize payouts: Players have 10 days after the conclusion of the tournament to claim their prize. We will email you twice. Please check your email if you believe you are prize eligible.
Contact: Email info@downriverchess.com with all questions.
**Refunds: **Players who withdraw 60 minutes before round one are eligible for a refund of their entry fee, minus any applicable payment-processor fees (typically 5-7%).

Mohar May Chess Tournament
Best Western
Saturday, May 9, 2026
EVENT OVERVIEW
Team Trophies!
Three players in the rated sections attending the same school (as of the spring 2026 semester). Teams have no upper limit; the more players on a team, the higher the chances for a good result, but only the top 3 players’ results count for the team total. The team gains points by winning or drawing rated games. Points are weighted, with results in higher sections worth more.
Mohar May Chess Tournament – Scholastic and Open Chess Tournament May 09, 2026 Best Western, 907 Holcomb Bridge Rd Roswell, GA 30076 4SS, G/25;d5 5 sections – An Open section for adults and advanced scholastic players, 3 Rated Scholastic-only sections for K-12 players and a Nonrated Scholastic practice section for new and young players. ROUND TIMES: First round is at 10:00AM, rounds 2-4 will start ASAP after the preceding rounds finish with a slightly longer break for lunch between rounds 2 and 3. We are usually done around 4 – 4:30 PM. NONRATED SECTION: The Nonrated section is for new/unrated players and players rated below 300 who need practice. While the rules of chess still apply, this is a more relaxed game designed to let new and young players experience chess without worrying about ratings. New players may choose to play in the Under 400 section if they want to become rated. 3 SCHOLASTIC-ONLY RATED SECTIONS: Under 400, Under 800 and Under 1200: These sections require an active US Chess Federation membership (https://new.uschess.org/join-us-chess). New players wanting a rating play in the Under 400. OPEN SECTION: This Section is available to both adults and scholastic players. Scholastic players rated over 1199 must play in this section; however, any scholastic player rated 1000+ may choose to play in either the Open or kids-only Under 1200 section. Players will be placed in the section that matches their rating unless granted an exemption by the Tournament Director. Rated sections may be combined at TD discretion. ENTRY FEE: Early entry received through 3rd May is $40. Registration is $45 from May 4 . Late registration begins May 7 and is $50. Same day, onsite registration is $50 and must be completed by 9:00AM to be paired for Round 1. Late sign ups may receive a ½ point round one bye. REGISTRATION: CLICK HERE, fill out the form, and pay via Zelle to m.mohua@gmail.com
BYES: If you have a scheduling conflict and plan to skip one or two rounds, 1/2 Point Byes are available and should be requested at the time of registration. INDIVIDUAL PRIZES: Trophies for 1st, 2nd, 3rd place in each SCHOLASTIC section and cash or gift cards for the Open section. TEAM PRIZES: Team Trophies to top 3 schools based on weighted points of 4 players. Must have a minimum of 3 players from the same school playing in the USCF Rated Sections to qualify for Team Prizes.
