Mohar August Chess Tournament
Hosted by Mohar Chess
Team Trophies! Three players in the rated sections attending the same school (as of the spring 2026 semester). Teams have no upper limit; the more players on a team, the higher the chances for a good result, but only the top 3 players’ results count for the team total. The team gains points by winning or drawing rated games. Points are weighted, with results in higher sections worth more.
Mohar August Chess Tournament – Scholastic and Open Chess Tournament August 22, 2026 Holiday Inn, 909 Holcomb Bridge Rd Roswell, GA 30076 4SS, G/25;d5 5 sections – An Open section for adults and advanced scholastic players, 3 Rated Scholastic-only sections for K-12 players and a Nonrated Scholastic practice section for new and young players. ROUND TIMES: First round is at 10:00AM, rounds 2-4 will start ASAP after the preceding rounds finish with a slightly longer break for lunch between rounds 2 and 3. We are done around 4 – 4:30 PM. NONRATED SECTION: The Nonrated section is for new/unrated players and players rated below 300 who need practice. While the rules of chess still apply, this is a more relaxed game designed to let new and young players experience chess without worrying about ratings. New players may choose to play in the Under 400 section if they want to become rated. 3 SCHOLASTIC-ONLY RATED SECTIONS: Under 400, Under 800 and Under 1200: These sections require an active US Chess Federation membership (https://new.uschess.org/join-us-chess). New players wanting a rating play in the Under 400. OPEN SECTION: This Section is available to both adults and scholastic players. Scholastic players rated over 1199 must play in this section; however, any scholastic player rated 1000+ may choose to play in either the Open or kids-only Under 1200 section. Players will be placed in the section that matches their rating unless granted an exemption by the Tournament Director. Rated sections may be combined at TD discretion. ENTRY FEE: Register Registration received till 15th August is $40. Late registration begins from 16th August to 21st August for $45. Same day, onsite registration is $50 and must be completed by 9:00AM to be paired for Round 1. Late sign ups may receive a ½ point round one bye.
The Women and Girls Open is Kentucky's premier Women and Girls event. It consists of two sections:
- an Open section for experienced players
- a Beginner section, which is perfect for first-time tournament players or for moms and coaches playing alongside their daughters and students.
This event is only open to women and girls, but players do not have to be from Kentucky.
This event is free and no US Chess membership is required for the beginner section.
Sections
This tournament has two sections: Open and Beginner.
The beginner section does not require US Chess membership. It is limited to players who either have no official US Chess rating or are rated below 800. We strongly recommend that new players choose the beginner section.
All women and girls with a US Chess membership can play in the Open section. To join US Chess, visit https://new.uschess.org/join-us-chess .
5 Rounds SS; G/25+5 (25 minutes per player, plus 5 seconds per move).
Entry Fees And registration
This tournament is free, but you must register online in advance to play. Please register as soon as possible, because our number of participants is limited due to space. Other Notes
- Players younger than high school age (~14) must be accompanied by an adult on site for the entire tournament.
- Boards, pieces, and clocks will be provided
- Players are expected to take notation in the Open section, but not the beginner section
- For lunch, there is a refrigerator and microwave available on site and there are places to eat within 10 minute drive. We will coordinate a pizza order for interested participants at a low cost.
For questions, contact: Dianna Gabbard, KY Women and Girls Coordinator, women@kychess.org; Include "KY Women & Girls Open" in the subject line.
Technical Notes
(most people don't need to care about these)
- Unrated players: In lieu of a published regular rating, the tournament director reserves the right to use other USCF ratings for pairing and prize eligibility purposes. Unrated players are eligible for 1st and 2nd prizes in each section, as well as Top Mom/Daughter pair.
- In case of ties for these invitational qualification slots, a two-way tie will be decided by a G/10+5 playoff, though the TD may shorten this to as low as G/5 if circumstances do not permit a longer game. If there is a three-way or more tie, the invite will go to the player with the highest established USCF rating among tied players, then the highest rating (even if not established), and finally to any unrated player.
- Accelerated pairings may be used at tournament director discretion.
- Rule variations 15A (you may write your move prior to making it) and 10I2 (you may touch the rook first when castling) will be used.
- Electronic scoresheets are not permitted.

Rise & Chess: Scholastic Fall Classic
Join us at Rise Coffee on Saturday, September 19, for a welcoming five-round chess tournament. The event includes three nationally rated scholastic sections for students in grades K–12, plus a separate non-US Chess-rated Roswell Chess Open available for adults to participate.
Beginners are welcome, and no previous tournament experience is required.
How the tournament works
The tournament will use a five-round Swiss format. Every player may play all five rounds, and no one is eliminated. Players are generally paired against opponents who have similar tournament scores. Each player receives 25 minutes for the entire game, with a five-second delay before the clock begins counting down after each move. This time control is written as G/25;d5. Please bring any chess clocks you may own.
Family Discount
Families get 50% discount (after first family member). After registering, the 2nd, 3rd, etc family member should show a 50% discount at the final step.
US Chess-rated scholastic sections
“Scholastic” means that these sections are for school-age players in grades K–12. The U400, U800, and Open Championship sections are officially rated by the United States Chess Federation, commonly called US Chess or USCF. US Chess is the ++official++ non-profit governing body for chess in the United States, representing over 110,000 members
A US Chess rating is a number that estimates a player’s tournament strength. Ratings change based on the results of officially rated games. The letter “U” means “under” and refers to rating, not age.
- U400 Beginner: For players rated below 400 and most players who do not yet have a US Chess rating.
- U800 Intermediate: For players rated from 400 through 799.
- Open Championship: For players rated 800 or higher. Lower-rated players may also choose this section for a greater challenge.
Prices for the USCF Sections are $30 admission (early bird pricing) and will rise to $35 within 48 hours of the tournament start. The Non Rated Open Section is $20 and will rise to $25 within 48 hours of tournament start.
Players who are new to USCF and do not have a rating will normally be placed in the U400 section. The tournament director may place an unrated player in a higher section based on previous tournament results, online ratings, club ratings, or known playing strength. Please reach out to us via the Send Club a Message on our Chess67 club page if you have any questions.
Players may compete in a higher section upon request but may not play in a lower section than their rating allows.
Games in these three sections will affect both players’ US Chess Regular and Quick ratings.
US Chess membership requirement
For the U400, U800, and U800+ sections: An active US Chess membership is required only for the U400, U800, and Open Championship sections.
Players who are not already members can join or renew through the official US Chess website: https://new.uschess.org/join-us-chess
New members will create an online account, purchase a membership, and receive a US Chess Member ID. Please complete this process before registering for a US Chess-rated section and enter the player’s Member ID during tournament registration. Parents should purchase the membership in the child’s name, since the child is the rated player.
For the Non Rated Open Section - No USCF ID is required.
Trophies and section adjustments
Trophies will be awarded to the top three finishers in each section. Sections may be combined for pairing purposes depending on attendance. If sections are combined, players may face opponents from an adjacent section. Trophies/awards for the originally advertised rating groups will remain separate unless otherwise announced before the tournament begins.
Players who finish with the same score will be ranked using standard tournament tie-breaks: Modified Median, Solkoff, Cumulative, Cumulative Opponent.
Chess67 will be used for tournament pairing and live results!
Roswell Chess Open
Just to reiterate. The separate Non Rated Open is not US Chess rated. It does not require a US Chess membership or national rating. All ages are able to play in this section.
Results from this section will count toward Roswell Chess Club’s local Roswell Rapid rating instead of a national US Chess rating.
